We are all familiar with the situation where you are typing the same word or sentence over and over in your windows programs. Wouldn’t it be easier if we could simply type the abbreviation of a word and it gets auto expanded to our desired phrase? A free software program called PhraseExpress is the perfect solution to this problem. Not only does it make expansion of text an absolute breeze, but also allows you to assign keyboard shortcuts to your text snippets.

Creation of a new phrase is easy: Let’s say you are typing the word abbreviation over and over. It makes sense to create a text shortcut for that like abbr. To do so, with PhraseExpress installed simply select the text and press the in-built keyboard shortcut to create a new phrase and set abbr as your Autotext. From then on whenever you type abbr (in any program in which you can type text) and hit a space it gets automatically expanded to abbreviation.

Listed below are 10 reasons why you should use PhraseExpress:

System-wide recognition. PhraseExpress works in notepad, email application, browser windows and wherever text can be typed.

PhraseExpress greatly helps prevent Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). Since the amount of text you type gets reduced, there’s less strain on your fingers.

PhraseExpress automatically corrects common misspellings in any program as you type, thanks to its ability to import Microsoft Word AutoCorrect entries.

PhraseExpress has a useful clipboard cache. You can assign a keyboard shortcut like Ctrl+Shift+V to bring up a list of last 10 items in the clipboard (text that you copied). Pasting any item from your last 10 clipboard entries in your current text taking program, then, is a simple click away.

Using the in-built Text Prediction feature, it’s not even necessary for you to create a new phrase. PhraseExpress learns as you type and auto suggests the phrase to be completed next time you are typing it

Multiple Autotext can be set to expand the same phrase. For example, you can have yrw, yaw and yw set to get expanded to You are welcome.

PhraseExpress allows you to re-use the same Autotext for multiple phrases. In such cases, a popup menu right next to your cursor allows you to choose the desired text snippet.

You can assign keyboard shortcut to any phrase. Tired of having to type your postal address in Email applications and browser windows several times? Simply assign a shortcut for that like Ctrl+Shift+1 and press it to have PhraseExpress automatically type the address for you.

Multiple modes of triggering the phrase expansion: Spacebar, instant expansion when the last character of Autotext is reached, expansion upon press of a confirmation key (F8 is the default).

For advanced users, PhraseExpress supports looping and basic macro programming. You can re-use phrases by linking and nesting them.

To work your way faster in PhraseExpress remember these tips:

To enable/disable PhraseExpress hold Control key and click on its icon in the system tray

To edit that phrase that you have most recently used, hold Shift key and click on the icon in system tray

If you don’t want the expanded phrase to have a space at the end, put a space after the Autotext.

From a usability point of view, you might want to set these keyboard shortcuts in PhraseExpress:

Ctrl+Shift+H (‘H’ for Hotstring) – Creates a new phrase from selected text

Ctrl+Shift+M (‘M’ for Manage) – Opens up PhraseExpress so you can edit your phrases

PhraseExpress Homepage|Download PhraseExpress | PhraseExpress manual | PhraseExpress forum

Conclusion

PhraseExpress is an excellent freeware using which you can create abbreviations that expand to your pre-set text. It is light-weight program and doesn’t consume much memory. It’s a must have program for anyone who have considerable typing to do in their day-to-day usage of computer.

Still using WordPress’s or Blogspot’s in-built editor for blogging? You might want to use a dedicated blog editor for the job and as of today, nothing beats Windows Live Writer. Windows Live Writer is a must-have free software if you are into blogging. Its What You See Is What You Get editor is pretty powerful and produces good HTML code unlike Microsoft Word.

Listed below are top 10 reasons why you would want to use Windows Live Writer:

No need to save the images first and then insert into the post you are composing. Have a screenshot or image in the clipboard? Just paste it in.

Image resizing. Can your blog hold only images up to 500px wide? No problem. For an image that’s wider than what can be fit in the content area of your blog, simply specify the width, 500px for example and the height will automatically be proportionally set. The thumbnail will automatically be linked to the full sized image (the link can of course be removed easily from ‘Link to’ dropdown).

Ability to specify whether the images should automatically be uploaded to your blog or to any FTP server. Hence there’s no need to upload your images separately to sites like Imageshack.

Twitter plugin. Just before a post is published to your blog, Twitter plugin will bring up a dialog box in which a TinyURL of your blog post link is present. You can edit the tweet and publish it to your Twitter.

Twitter plugin for Windows Live Writer can be installed by following this guide.

The ability to select existing categories and create new ones right from the program interface.

Image layout options: Inline, Left, Right, Center; We can also set custom margins on all the 4 sides for an image.

Windows Live Writer has multiple options for borders:

Most of the images inside posts in this blog just as the one above uses ‘Drop Shadow’ border.

Need to go out in the middle of writing your post? Windows Live Writer has that taken care of. Just hit Ctrl+S and a draft of your post is saved so you can always revisit and continue where you left off.

The ability to add multiple blogs. Simply select the blog that you want to publish to in the top right dropdown.

Rich text editor. Just like in MS Word, you can Ctrl+B to bold text, Ctrl+U to underline, Ctrl+I to italicize etc. Quotation marks, Ordered and unordered lists work great too.

The keyboard shortcut to hyperlink a word is Ctrl+K.

You can preview how your post looks as if it’s posted in ‘Preview’ tab and edit the HTML source in ‘Source’ tab.

Other notable features

Integrated spell checker: Although this is not as great as the one in Firefox, something is better than nothing. The spell checker fails to recognize some common program and Internet-related terms. If my memory serves right, it flags ‘Google’ and ‘Firefox’ as misspellings (can’t verify any more since I have them added to its correction list).

Interface automatically shows your blog’s theme and imports the stylesheet. So you actually feel that you are directly typing inside your blog in the font style of your blog.

You can insert tables, maps, tags, videos, code snippets and more.

Has proxy support so you can for example, blog from your office as well.

Conclusion

Windows Live Writer makes blogging easy and fast so ultimately you write more in less time. No more fiddling with image resizing, manual uploading and clumsy feature-less editing. Writing blog posts inside it as easy as using MS Word. If you are still using the editor of your native blogging platform, it’s time to give Windows Live Writer a try. You will like it.

ChromePlugins.org has released a bookmarklet which will bring the dual split view to Google Chrome.

this will enable you to create 2 side by side “panels” in Chrome in the same tab so you can browse two sites at once side by side.

To get the split view:

Visit http://www.chromeplugins.org/plugins/google-chrome-dual-view/ and add the bookmarklet to your browser bookmarks.

Click on the bookmarklet

The existing tab location will be filled by default. You can change it to the URL of the page to appear in the left side and press OK.

Then enter the URL of the page to appear in the right tab. You have the option to prevent this page from creating additional dialogs.

That’s it. Your existing tabs will remain intact and within a single tab, you can see both the sites like this:

What can you do with GBridge?

File sharing – Securely share files among your own computers, so you can remotely access your files. Securely share files to your designated friend, so the selected friend can instantly view the auto-generated photo thumbnails and slideshows remotely.

File syncing – Transfer big files and sync folders from/to anywhere. Note that this is not truly bi-directional. For more info, visit this forum topic.

Backup – Setup an auto-recurring local or remote backup of your important directory

Screen sharing – Access your computer desktop remotely or share your desktop with your friend from anywhere, even behind NAT. Note that GBridge doesn’t work when you are using a VPN connection.

The current latest version of official delicious add-on for Firefox replaces your standard browser bookmarks with bookmarks from your delicious account, besides providing useful buttons for bookmarking a page and bringing up your delicious bookmarks.

If you are interested in just adding the buttons and not the entire functionality provided by the official add-on, you might want to get the classic version. Unfortunately the add-on that page is not compatible with Firefox 3.0+. It has been modified to work with the latest Firefox by Micah Sittig and can be downloaded from here.

I have created a mirror for it here.

How the add-on works

The above add-on adds 2 buttons in Firefox like so:

Clicking on thebutton takes you to your bookmarks page at delicious.com.

Clicking on the button brings up a window like so:

where you can enter description for the bookmark (up to 1000 characters) and your tags. The tags can either be selected from recommended list at the right or typed (suggests your existing ones as you type)

Setting up keyboard shortcut to bookmark a page to delicious

For faster bookmarking you might want set a keyboard shortcut like Ctrl+D (‘D’ for delicious) using the keyconfig add-on. Keyconfig is a pretty useful add-on for creating new and modifying existing keyboard shortcuts in Firefox. Here is a detailed tutorial on how to use keyconfig in Firefox.

Once you have keyconfig installed, bring it up by pressing Ctrl+Shift+F12 and search for an entry Tag this page. It will be assigned to "Ctrl+Shift+/" by default. To modify this shortcut, just select that entry, press your new key combo (Ctrl+D) and hit Apply. When you restart Firefox, the new keyboard shortcut is ready to use.
