To install a new incompatible add-on and make it compatible

1. Click on the xpi file link

   

2. Click on Allow button at the top right
3. In the prompt to remove the extension installation delay, you may want to click Yes.

   

4. Tick “Override ‘maxVersion’ compatibility checking and click ‘Install now’ button.

   

5. Restart Firefox to complete your changes.

To make an existing incompatible add-on compatible

1. Bring up add-ons list by pressing Ctrl+Shift+A
2. Right click on the incompatible add-on and select ‘Make compatible’

     

3. Press OK to confirm the action

   

4. Restart Firefox to complete your changes.

The file size is 9.4 MB. After download of the update is complete, restart Firefox. Note that there could be some compatibility problems with your existing add-ons.

If you are interested in just adding the buttons and not the entire functionality provided by the official add-on, you might want to get the classic version. Unfortunately the add-on that page is not compatible with Firefox 3.0+. It has been modified to work with the latest Firefox by Micah Sittig and can be downloaded from here.

I have created a mirror for it here.

How the add-on works

The above add-on adds 2 buttons in Firefox like so:

Clicking on thebutton takes you to your bookmarks page at delicious.com.

Clicking on the button brings up a window like so:

where you can enter description for the bookmark (up to 1000 characters) and your tags. The tags can either be selected from recommended list at the right or typed (suggests your existing ones as you type)

Setting up keyboard shortcut to bookmark a page to delicious

For faster bookmarking you might want set a keyboard shortcut like Ctrl+D (‘D’ for delicious) using the keyconfig add-on. Keyconfig is a pretty useful add-on for creating new and modifying existing keyboard shortcuts in Firefox. Here is a detailed tutorial on how to use keyconfig in Firefox.

Once you have keyconfig installed, bring it up by pressing Ctrl+Shift+F12 and search for an entry Tag this page. It will be assigned to "Ctrl+Shift+/" by default. To modify this shortcut, just select that entry, press your new key combo (Ctrl+D) and hit Apply. When you restart Firefox, the new keyboard shortcut is ready to use.

The way it works is: Say you want to search in Google for “free data recovery software”, you type the keyword associated with Google search followed by your search term and then wait for a second or so and the results will show up. You can go to your desired result either in the same tab or in a new tab (by navigating to and pressing Alt+Enter).

The add-on supports all these: Google search, Google Local search, Google Video Search, Google Image search (as pointed out in the extension’s page, this is not so useful since it doesn’t show the images or their thumbs), Google Blog search, Google Book search, Google Patent search and Wikipedia search.

In the add-ons options, we can modify existing search keywords and add more. These are some of my frequently used searches and their keywords:

• g – Google search
• dc – Searches in donationcoder.com using Google
• gi – Google Image search
• gblog – Google Blog search
• gvid – Google Video search
• t – Searches in techcrunch.com using Google

After it is installed, Tools –> Pencil Sketching will start the application. Pages are arranged in tabs.

Page size can be changed by right clicking on the page tab and visiting its Properties.

It’s very easy and intuitive to work with the Pencil Project. The toolbar icons are clear in what they mean and one can easily for example, line elements such that their vertical centers match. Also every element’s properties and layer order are only a right click away.

The complete page or document (collection of pages) can be exported as PNG.

3 practical uses of The Pencil Project:

1. Design a web page or even a complete web site since it supports a single background for multiple pages
2. Design a brochure/pamphlet
3. Quickly annotate a screenshot by adding bullets, balloons and text

1. It highlights the main domain name so you are 100% sure that you are surfing your bank website or PayPal and not some spoofed site designed to capture your keystrokes.
    
   You can also format the appearance of domain name and other parts of the address using custom styles.
2. Linkifies every segment of the URL in the address bar. Just hold Ctrl (to open in a new tab) or Shift (to open in a new window) or Alt (uses the current tab) and hover over the segment you want to go to and click.
    

In the add-on’s Options window, we can set if double clicking in the location bar will select the entire URL.

Ticking the ‘strong’ option will bold the domain name like so:

When breadcrumbs are enabled for the host, a small arrow appears right next to the main domain name.

and when breadcrumb navigation is enabled for each segment, arrows appear after each segment.

Conclusion: All in all, Locationbar² is a very simple and handy add-on to have in Firefox. It makes navigating to different sections of a URL easy and quick. My only request to Locationbar²’s author is to provide an option to open the links (when clicked on a segment of the linkified URL in address bar) in the same tab. Currently they open in new tab always. (The author commented below that the feature exists already)

1. Export your del.icio.us bookmarks as an HTML file
2. Export your Firefox 3 bookmarks as a JSON file
3. Create your combined JSON file by merging the above two files using the form on the page linked above.
4. Re-import the combined bookmarks to Firefox.

The official version hosted at Firefox Add-ons site is not yet updated to Firefox 3.0. But a working version of Snap Links for Firefox 3.0 can be downloaded from Andrew Sherman’s blog. Here is the direct link.

How to use Snap Links:

Draw a bounding rectangle across the links which you want to manage (opened in new tabs or bookmarked or downloaded) with your right mouse button pressed. When you release the mouse, the default action is to open the selected links in new tabs in background. If you would like to be prompted for other actions like bookmarking and downloading them, hold the Ctrl key before releasing the mouse.
