When you post a message to your channel, all the members of your channel get the message forwarded for free. The regular charges for sending out SMS apply as usual. You can also post a message to your channel from SMS Channels website.
After entering a nickname and my mobile number, I received a SMS having a 4-digit verification code instantly. Once you get the code, revisit http://labs.google.co.in/smschannels/browse, agree to TOS and paste in the code. It’s surprising to see that Google hasn’t provided a confirmation upon successful entry of the verification code. You can now subscribe to the available channels, search for channels and create your own. Once you are subscribed to a channel, you see a link to invite others.
Creating a new SMS Channel
While creating a new SMS Channel (Channel name must have at least 8 characters) available options are: publishing by any subscriber (making it like a forum/mailing list) or only you (like a newsletter); and whether any user can subscribe or needs to be invited to do so.

Conclusion
Google SMS Channels is a good alternative to SMS GupShup! It’s a useful free service to keep in touch with your friends and family and other groups via SMS. The service is not completely bug-free. For example, it said that MozillaFirefox channel is available when searched, but when trying to create it we are greeted with “This channel name is not available”.

]]>One of the easiest ways of rounding corners of an image is to use the online image editing service called Picnik.
- a) If you want to round the corners of an image on a web page, you should get the Picnik add-on for Firefox from here. Once you have the extension installed, you can simply right click on the image and select ‘Edit Image in Picnik…’ option from the context menu. That will automatically open Picnik website in a new tab with your image ready to be edited.
b) If you would like to apply rounded corners to an existing image on your computer, visit http://www.picnik.com/ and click ‘Get from Computer’. Browse to and bring your image into Picnik.
- Now go to ‘Create’ tab, click on ‘Frames’ and select ‘Rounded Edges’
- You can see that the edges of your image immediately get rounded with a default corner radius of 27 (changeable). Also you can set the background color to be the same as the color of webpage on which you intend to place the image.
- Go to ‘Save & Share’ tab and save the image to your computer or have it directly sent to image hosting sites like Flickr and Picasa.

CoolWhois lets you look up the registration information for any domain name including the generic top level domains (.com, .net, .org, .info and .biz) and the country top level domains (such as .uk, .de, .to, .ws, .at, etc.)

SlideRocket is a rich Internet application that provides everything you need to design professional quality presentations, manage and share libraries of slides and assets, and to deliver presentations in person or remotely over the web. SlideRocket beta is now open to the public.
SlideRocket includes all the best features of the desktop applications and adds in professional-quality design tools. Also supports remote meetings. The finished presentations can be viewed full screen.

Interface
The slide creation GUI is intuitive with tools for inserting text, picture, videos at the left side element specific properties displayed at the right. Buttons for inserting new slides, accessing library and playing are at bottom left.
We can search for Flickr Images within the application and insert any.
Rich media like movies can be inserted into slides. Visual effects include drop shadow and glow for text, reflections and 3D rotation for pictures and video. Animations effects include Motion Blur Flyin, Materialize, Sparkle, and Decoder.
Some useful keyboard shortcuts:
- Ctrl+S – Save presentation
- Ctrl+P – Print presentation
- Ctrl+Z – Undo
- Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V – Copy and Paste
Autosave is enabled by default and is set every 5 minutes and whenever you navigate to another slide.
Publishing
File –> Close (or F1) closes the presentation and takes you back to dashboard from where it can be published. The publish screen looks like this:
Just like in PowerPoint, a click takes the user to next slide.
SlideRocket also comes with an offline client that let’s you present without an Internet connection. You can synchronize your online presentations to offline and take them with you.
Collaboration
You can add up to 4 additional users to your account and take advantage of some of the team oriented SlideRocket functionality:

- Create presentations collaboratively

Conclusion
What’s missing in SlideRocket is the ability to auto play presentations like slideshows. But otherwise, SlideRocket is a lovely web application for creating presentations with a pretty neat interface.
Update: Per the email that I received from SlideRocket team and the comment below, it is possible to create slideshows for the presentations by setting the ‘Advance On’ property of each slide.

The site to upload and share files for free with infinite space.
Summary:
- Unlimited space. There are no limits on storage, bandwidth or the number of files you can store.
- Max file size: 1GB
- Allowed file types: Everything (music, videos, pictures, zip files, exe files) except .js and .php.
- Provides a desktop client with easy drag and drop facility besides a web based file manager.
- Files can be set as private or public. However, if you give the link to a private file to someone, they will be able to access it. So just make sure you give the private link only to people you want to allow access to. Also ensure that you aren’t making any copyrighted material as public since MyBloop allows music, videos and movies to be uploaded as long as it is marked private and is not shared with anyone else.
- Hotlinking is allowed only for image files.
- Users can download all files types except for music.

Caution: Going by the posts in in.solit.us forum, it appears as if the service is shaky and unstable with uploads not proceeding smoothly etc. So if I were you, I’ll skip this for now. Seems like a service to watch out for in the future though.

bit.ly is another web service like the popular tinyURL. You paste the long URL in the text box at bit.ly, optionally set a custom keyword and click on Shorten button to get the shortened URL.
For example, let’s say that I am researching on water purifiers and came across a page whose URL is http://www.eurekaforbes.com/products/healthylife/wpurifier.php. Now I want to be able to go to this link in the future without having to bookmark and by just typing out an URL. I can go to bit.ly, specify ‘aquaguard’ as the keyword and it will generate this URL which points to the same page: http://bit.ly/aquaguard.
bit.ly doesn’t yet have all the useful tools like a Firefox add-on or integration in Twitter clients like twhirl. A browser bookmarklet is available though. But with a good API to shorten, expand and extract URL info, I am sure bit.ly is going to replace tinyURL from its #1 spot.

- Send a once-off or recurring (daily/weekly/monthly/annually) Emails
- Send a one time or recurring unlimited number of free SMS messages to any number in the world. The character limit of each message is 125. The received message will have a line ‘Sent by Sendible.com’ or an ad at the bottom. So you might want to add your name in your message so the recipient knows who sent it to him/her. To send a SMS to a phone in India, prefix the number with 91.
Sendible is also working on making replies to your SMS appear in your account. That will make it a nice two-way web-to-mobile and mobile-to-web communication medium.
- Send a once-off or recurring messages to your contacts in these social networks: Facebook, Myspace, Friendster, Hi5 and Orkut.
- Sendible also supports posting to Twitter, but at the moment they are not offering recurring auto posting.
Sendible is going to soon implement event management as well.
You will be able to invite people to an event by email, SMS or social network messages and they’ll be able to RSVP without having to be registered.
Also, those people that are attending the event will be sent reminders closer to the time, and those people that haven’t RSVP’d will be sent reminders to RSVP.
Currently it’s possible to misuse Sendible to send anonymous SMSes. Hopefully they will soon implement a way around this. But otherwise it’s a very useful service. If you haven’t already, you might also want to check out how to set free reminders (incl. SMS) in Google Calendar.

Identi.ca has support for OpenID and so you don’t need to create a new user account if you already have OpenID. After creating a nickname, you can immediately start typing in the text box. The character limit is set to 140 like in other similar services.
One extra feature that Identi.ca has that Twitter currently doesn’t is Instant Messenger support. Not only can you be notified via your GTalk or Yahoo! Messenger or a Jabber client, but also post your updates from within IM clients. For that you have to first add update@identi.ca to your IM client and then provide your IM address in the settings. After that, just confirm by clicking on a link in the IM message and from then on you can simply click on update@identi.ca in GTalk or whichever IM client you use to publish your short text.
Identi.ca is built using open source code that can be downloaded from Laconica site.
